Malawi Ngapani Estate FILTER COFFEE is a light roast specialty coffee from Malawi, roasted with pour-over methods in mind. It comes from one of the last large coffee estates in the country, Ngapani Estate, which belongs to the Nsondole Sleeping Giant group. Washed processing brings out its clean, juicy character, and in the cup you will find notes of green apple, guava, grapes, orange, delicate florals and a subtle spicy finish.
It is a coffee for people who like clear, fruity, fresh filter coffee without excessive sharpness. Elegant, light and very pleasant as an everyday brew.
Malawi Ngapani Estate: light roast coffee for filter
We gave Malawi Ngapani Estate a light roast to show the natural character of this bean at its best. This roast profile works very well in pour-over methods, where clarity of flavour, fruit and a delicate structure matter most.
In the cup the coffee is fresh, juicy and well defined. It has clear fruity sweetness, pleasant citrus and a subtle floral, spicy touch at the end. This is not a heavy or chocolatey coffee. Its character is crisper, fruitier and more elegant.
Tasting notes: green apple, orange and a spicy finish
Malawi Ngapani Estate FILTER COFFEE has a profile that combines the freshness of fruit with light sweetness and a clean finish.
You may taste:
- green apple
- guava
- grapes
- orange
- delicate floral notes
- a subtle spicy finish
Green apple gives the coffee a pleasant freshness and juiciness. Orange adds gentle citrus sweetness, and the floral, spicy finish stops the coffee from being one-dimensional. Overall it is light, clean and works very well as an everyday filter coffee.
Ngapani Estate: coffee from one of the last large estates in Malawi
The coffee comes from Ngapani Estate, one of the two estates that make up the Nsondole Sleeping Giant group. The group’s name refers to the mountain that towers over one of the estates and is an important part of the local landscape.
Ngapani Estate lies close to the border with Mozambique. It is an isolated area, and that isolation has helped the estate keep its character. Were it not for its location, it could have been converted entirely to other crops, such as macadamia. The owners, however, kept Ngapani as a mixed estate where coffee still has an important place.
That is why Malawi Ngapani Estate is not an anonymous coffee from a large, mass-market supply chain. It is a bean with a specific origin, history and local context.
Washed process: clean and elegant in the cup
Malawi Ngapani Estate is washed processed. This method gives a clean, clear and more elegant flavour profile.
In this coffee, washed processing highlights:
- the freshness of green apple
- the citrus character of orange
- the clarity of the cup
- a delicate floral and spicy finish
There are no heavy, fermented notes here. The flavour is orderly, light and easy to read, which is why it works so well in pour-over methods.
Malawi Ngapani Estate varieties
This coffee includes several botanical varieties that together build its complex character. They are:
- Catimore C128
- Catimore C129
- Populations
- SL 28
- Caturra
- Catuai
- Ruiru 11
This combination of varieties gives the coffee an interesting structure, fruity freshness and subtle complexity. The presence of SL 28 in particular may bring to mind the elegance, fruit and character known from high-quality African coffees.
Growing conditions: 1,200-1,400 m a.s.l.
The coffee grows at 1,200-1,400 m a.s.l. These conditions help the bean develop sweetness, freshness and fruity notes.
Ngapani Estate is located in a region with a distinctive character. Coffee is grown there alongside other crops, which gives the place a more varied farming landscape. This matters, because coffee from places like this often has more of a story than an ordinary bean from a broadly defined region.
Rainforest Alliance: responsible coffee farming
Malawi Ngapani Estate is Rainforest Alliance certified. This means the coffee comes from farms run according to standards for more responsible production, environmental protection and good agricultural practice.
It is worth stressing that Rainforest Alliance is not the same as organic (BIO) certification. It is a separate standard focused on a sustainable approach to farming, the environment and the communities involved in coffee production.
