PuqPress M5 Automatic Tamper

PuqPress M5 is an automatic tamper built into a base for Mahlkönig E80 grinders, designed for high-volume stations. It fits the E80S, E80 Supreme and E80W GbS, so grinding and consistent tamping happen on one working axis. Its main advantage is saving counter space without giving up pressure adjustment, five tamping profiles and capacity for more than 10 kg of coffee a week.

PuqPress M5 for Mahlkönig E80 grinders

The M5 is designed as an automatic tamper that sits under the Mahlkönig E80. The manufacturer lists compatibility with the E80S, E80 Supreme and E80W GbS, the grind-by-weight version that people also search for as E80 GbW. The same tamper model can therefore work with both the E80 Supreme and the grind-by-weight grinder.

The tamper is not fitted inside the grinder. A compatible E80 stands on the matching M5 base, with no changes to the grinding mechanism. The grinder is not included and has to be bought separately.

How an automatic tamper organises the station

After grinding, the portafilter goes straight into the tamper under the grinder. The barista does not carry it to a separate unit standing next to the grinder, and every tamp uses the selected pressure and profile. With a high number of orders, this cuts movement between steps and reduces repetitive manual tamping.

With a compatible E80, choosing the freestanding PuqPress Q would be a step back mainly in terms of counter layout, not tamping quality. A separate tamper needs extra space and splits grinding and tamping into two stations. The M5 keeps both steps within the same working footprint.

Tamping profiles and pressure from 5 to 30 kg

Pressure can be set within 5-30 kg in 1 kg steps using the Adjustment Wheel. 30 kg is the top of the range, not a setting every coffee needs. Match the force to your recipe and basket, starting from a lower value.

• Speedy (fast): 1.3 s.
• Precision: 2.1 s.
• Soft (gentle): 2.5 s.
• Hulk (strong): 2.5 s, two tamps with force plus a polishing movement.
• Single: a single tamping profile.

The PuqPress M5 does not have the Profile Switch feature. The profiles are available on the unit, but do not expect the separate profile switch known from other versions.

PuqPress M5: 58 or 58.3 mm tamper base?

At Colbergcoffee this model is available with a 58.3 mm base, in matt black or matt white. You can change the base yourself in about 30 seconds, and the manufacturer offers diameters of 53, 54.3, 57.3, 58 and 58.3 mm. The other diameters describe what the interchangeable base system supports, not what comes in the set on offer.

The tamper works with bottomless, single-spout and double-spout portafilters. The model has no Mirror Tray, so this part is not included.

Dimensions, power and warranty

The base measures 33.8 x 23.3 x 14 cm, so plan for a 33.8 x 23.3 cm footprint and add 14 cm to the height of the grinder standing on it. At 5.5 kg it is the heaviest and one of the largest models in the M series. Power supply is 110-240 VAC, 50-60 Hz, and power is 76 W.

The manufacturer rates it for more than 10 kg of coffee a week. The PuqPress M5 can therefore work as an automatic tamper for a busy café, including one open seven days a week. The warranty is 2 years with no limit on the number of tamps.
