PuqPress Mini GEN6 Automatic Tamper

PuqPress Mini GEN6 is a freestanding automatic tamper for home use and venues using up to 7 kg of coffee a week. It delivers 10 to 30 kg of pressure, adjustable in 1 kg steps, and offers three tamping profiles. It is the smallest PUQ model, and it is not intended for high-volume cafés or stations working under constant load all day.

PuqPress Mini GEN6: 10-30 kg pressure and three profiles

Automatic tamping helps you prepare the coffee puck with the same pressure every time. It reduces differences caused by the barista’s strength and technique, which makes it easier to keep espresso preparation consistent at home or in a small venue.

Force can be set from 10-30 kg, in 1 kg steps. The Mini does not have the Adjustment Wheel used on higher PUQ models, so it should not be seen as a scaled-down Q or Pro. The pressure range is also narrower: it does not cover settings from 5 to 9 kg.

Three tamping profiles are available:

• Speedy: a 1.3-second cycle,
• Precision: a 2.1-second cycle,
• Single: a single-tamp profile.

The Mini does not offer the Soft and Hulk profiles. It also has no Profile Switch or Mirror Tray, which are available on the Pro.

For home and small venues: 7 kg of coffee a week

The most important figure when choosing this model is its capacity of up to 7 kg of coffee a week. That suits a home espresso station, an office, a studio, a showroom or a small venue where the number of drinks stays moderate.

If a venue regularly uses more than 7 kg of coffee a week, runs for many hours without a break or serves queues at peak times, the Mini will be too weak a choice. In that situation compact size should not outweigh the capacity you need. For a busy café, the Q or Pro, designed for heavier loads, is a better choice.

The manufacturer’s warranty is 2 years / 150,000 tamps. This is another figure that shows the Mini’s position as an entry model for lower volumes.

58 or 58.3 mm base and supported portafilters

The version on offer has a 58.3 mm base. It is intended for baskets where the espresso machine or basket manufacturer recommends a 58.3 mm tamper. Describing a group head as “58 mm” is not always enough to confirm the fit, so check the recommended tamper diameter for your basket before buying.

This also applies to La Marzocco, Lelit and ECM machines: judge compatibility by the basket fitted, not just the machine brand. The PuqPress Mini works with bottomless, single spout and double spout portafilters.

The manufacturer offers interchangeable bases in 53, 54.3, 57.3, 58 and 58.3 mm. You can swap the base yourself in about 30 seconds, but the other diameters are not supplied with the chosen version.

A small automatic coffee tamper for limited counter space

The PuqPress Mini measures 18.1 x 13.6 x 27.2 cm and weighs 3.4 kg. It is the smallest unit in the brand’s range, so it is easier to find room for it next to a home espresso machine or on a small bar station.

Being freestanding, it does not need to sit under a specific grinder. You can arrange the espresso machine, grinder and tamper independently, and if you change equipment there is no base to match to a new grinder housing.

The 110-240 VAC, 50-60 Hz power supply lets it work with different mains standards, and the unit is rated at 76 W. It is available in matte black and matte white.

When is the Q or Pro a better choice?

Choose the Mini when your priorities are small size, automatic tamping and actual use of no more than 7 kg of coffee a week. The Q is the better fit for higher volumes, if you need pressure from 5 kg, five tamping profiles and control via the Adjustment Wheel.

The Pro is for users who want the most complete set of controls, including the physical Profile Switch and Mirror Tray. If the automatic tamper is going into a busy café, or the venue is likely to outgrow the Mini’s limit soon, a higher model is a safer choice than running the unit beyond its rated capacity.
