PuqPress Pro Automatic Tamper

PuqPress Pro is a freestanding automatic tamper for large cafés and bars that need consistent espresso tamping. As the brand’s top model, it combines 5-30 kg of pressure with five profiles, a physical Profile Switch and a Mirror Tray. It is available in matte black or matte white, with a 58 or 58.3 mm base.

An automatic tamper for a busy café

Pressure can be set from 5-30 kg in 1 kg steps. This is done with the Adjustment Wheel, so changing the setting needs no extra tools. Every portafilter is tamped to the same parameters, regardless of the barista’s strength or experience.

The manufacturer rates the Pro at no limit on kilograms of coffee per week. It is built for heavy use, including venues with a high number of orders and several baristas on one shift. Automatic tamping reduces strain on the wrists and helps keep espresso preparation consistent.

Five tamping profiles: what does each mode change?

The PuqPress Pro lets you adjust not only the pressure but also how the cycle is carried out. Five profiles are available:

• Speedy, 1.3 s: the fastest profile, for efficient work with a high number of orders.
• Precision, 2.1 s: slower retraction of the base reduces suction between the tamper and the basket.
• Soft, 2.5 s: a gentler profile for recipes that need lighter tamping.
• Hulk, 2.5 s: two tamps at the set force followed by a polishing movement. It can increase puck resistance without changing the dose or grind size.
• Single: a single tamp without the extra stages used in the other profiles.

You can use different modes when you change coffee, recipe or basket. A profile does not replace setting the grinder correctly, but it lets you keep the agreed tamping method at every station.

PuqPress Pro: Profile Switch and Mirror Tray

Profile Switch is a physical switch that lets you change profile without stopping work at the bar. The barista does not have to go through the device settings each time, which matters when drinks with different recipes are made at one station. The PuqPress Pro is the only model in the range with this feature.

Mirror Tray is a mirrored tray that makes it easier to check visually how the portafilter sits and whether the tamp is level. It helps you spot deviations faster during service and keep the portafilter positioned the same way. The Q and Mini do not have this feature either.

Which base diameter should you choose?

The Pro supports bases in 57.3, 58 and 58.3 mm, and we offer it in 58 and 58.3 mm versions. Choose the diameter to match the inner size of your basket, not just the nominal group head size. If in doubt, check the basket marking or measure its inside diameter.

The PuqPress Pro works with bottomless portafilters and with single and double spout portafilters. It does not support 53 and 54.3 mm bases; for smaller baskets choose the appropriate version of the Q or Mini.

PuqPress Pro vs Q and Mini

• Pro: five profiles, 5-30 kg pressure, no weekly kilogram limit, Profile Switch, Mirror Tray and a 3-year warranty with no tamp limit.
• Q: five profiles and 5-30 kg pressure, capacity up to 25 kg of coffee a week and a warranty of 2 years or 300,000 tamps. No Profile Switch or Mirror Tray, but it also supports 53 and 54.3 mm diameters.
• Mini: a model for lighter loads, with three profiles and a 10-30 kg pressure range. It supports the smaller 53 and 54.3 mm diameters that the Pro does not offer.

One PuqPress Pro can serve two bar stations if it is placed where both baristas can reach it easily. Keep in mind, though, that only one person can use it at a time. With two independent stations, separate units reduce baristas getting in each other’s way at the busiest times.

The PuqPress Pro measures 19.5 x 14.5 x 30.1 cm and weighs 4.1 kg. It runs on 110-240 VAC, 50-60 Hz and is rated at 76 W. The unit is made by the Dutch company Barista Technology BV.
