Light roast coffee from Brazil: Fazenda Barinas
A great choice for a dripper, AeroPress or filter coffee machine (such as a Moccamaster). The light roast lets you taste a very sweet coffee with a bouquet of aromas that come from its terroir. Natural processing gives the coffee high body, so the sweetness is dense and intense, woven beautifully with ripe tropical fruit such as mango and papaya and an aroma of honeydew honey.
About the producer
The Castro Alves family story began in the nineteenth century in the Araxá region of Minas Gerais. Founded in 1950, Fazenda Barinas is one of the pioneers of coffee production in the region, and today it is run by Tiago C. Alves. The name Barinas means “where the wind blows strongest” and was given in honour of the Indigenous Araxás people who lived in the region. Today the family is seen as a model in specialty coffee production, and it is well known for its diversity and professionalism, which show in the excellence of its coffees.
Production
Crop management is planned on the basis of soil and leaf analysis. The farm uses slow-release fertilisers and no herbicides. Instead it relies on green manure: the brachiaria between the rows is cut back and returned to the soil as organic matter. It also practises integrated pest management. To prevent water shortages during plant growth, eighty per cent of the plantation has drip irrigation, controlled by tensiometers and a weather station.
