The Mahlkönig E80W GbS is an electric espresso grinder with 80 mm burrs, a built-in scale and the Grind by Sync system. It is designed for high-volume cafés that want to dose coffee without weighing every portion separately. It is the top model of the E family, combining 6-7 g/s output with dose control to within 0.1 g.

Dosing by weight instead of by grinding time
A built-in load cell monitors the weight of coffee ground straight into the portafilter. The barista sets the target dose, starts grinding, and the grinder stops once that weight is reached. There is no need to check every dose on a separate scale afterwards and correct grinding time by hand.
Dosing accuracy is 0.1 g. This matters as temperature and humidity change and as the hopper gradually empties, because time-based dosing does not always deliver the same weight of coffee under those conditions.
There is a real trade-off to know about: a grinder with a scale doses slightly more slowly than a time-based version. Before grinding starts, the system has to read the weight of the portafilter and then control the dose. The extra time is the price of a repeatable dose, not a fault.
Mahlkönig E80W GbS: electric adjustment to 0.001 mm
Grind size is set electrically. The Disc Distance Detection system monitors the distance between the burrs to within 0.001 mm, so a setting can be saved and repeated without turning a ring by hand.
The 80 mm flat burrs are made of cast steel. Their stated life is around 2,500 kg of coffee. At a 250 micron setting the grinder delivers 6-7 g/s, so it suits venues where fast espresso service directly affects the queue at the bar.
Is it worth paying an extra 4,260 zł for the weighing version?
The E80S is 13,339 zł gross, while the E80W GbS is 17,599 zł gross, a difference of 4,260 zł. Both models use 80 mm burrs and deliver high output, but the E80S doses by time and has manual adjustment, while the E80W GbS weighs the coffee and adjusts grind size electrically.
The extra cost is justified when repeatable recipes, less wasted coffee and fewer manual corrections during a shift matter to the venue. If the barista checks every dose on an external scale anyway, or the venue is moderately busy, the time-based E80S may be enough.
An integrated PuqPress M5 automatic tamper can be fitted under the grinder. It acts as the base and takes up no extra counter space.
Mahlkönig E80S GbW vs E80W GbS: what the names mean
These model designations are often confused in Polish shops. In the current naming, the letter S stands for time-based dosing, while W indicates dosing by weight. The E80S is also sold as the E80 Supreme. It is the same grinder, without a built-in scale.
The E80S GbW (Grind by Weight) belongs to the older generation and has been discontinued. Its successor is the E80W GbS with Grind by Sync. Anyone searching for “Mahlkonig E80S GbW” should therefore compare the older model with the current E80W GbS, not with the time-based E80S.
