PUQ Prep Navigator Automatic WDT Coffee Distributor

PUQ Prep Navigator is an automatic WDT tool that breaks up clumps and evens out the density of ground coffee before tamping. It was made for specialty cafés that already use manual WDT but want to cut the work on every portafilter and make it consistent between baristas. One touch starts a repeatable distribution cycle that prepares an even bed for tamping.

How does the PUQ Prep Navigator work?

The Navigator uses a set of thin needles arranged in a random pattern. When you place the portafilter under the device, the needles pass through the ground coffee and rotate within the bed. They break up clumps, spread the grounds across the basket and even out the density.

The device replaces stirring the grounds by hand with a needle tool. The barista no longer has to repeat the same movements every time or watch their direction and depth. There are three distribution profiles to choose from: Standard, Speedy and Precision. A delayed mode is also available.

Why use an automatic WDT tool?

WDT, the Weiss Distribution Technique, prepares the coffee for an even flow of water. If clumps or areas of different density remain in the basket, water takes the path of least resistance. The result is channelling: part of the coffee is over-extracted and part under-extracted. The espresso can taste sour and hollow even with the correct dose and shot time.

Manual WDT takes ten seconds or more and depends on each barista’s technique. An automatic cycle reduces these differences, which matters most at busy times and when several people work at one station.

WDT vs a rotating distributor: what is the difference?

A classic rotating distributor mainly levels the surface of the coffee. It does not reach through the whole bed, so it can leave clumps and uneven density in the deeper layers. WDT needles work inside the grounds, so preparation goes beyond smoothing the top.

The Navigator does not replace a tamper. The workflow at the station is: grinder, Navigator, tamper. First you grind, then you even out the structure of the grounds with WDT, and only then do you tamp the bed.

Needle rings matched to basket dose

The device uses needle rings matched to the amount of coffee in the basket. The grey ring with short needles is for a dose of 18-20 g, and the black ring with long needles is for a dose of 20-22 g. The rings are consumable parts.

Choosing the right ring lets the needles work at the correct depth. This matters in practice when you change baskets or your espresso recipe.
