Mahlkönig E65W GbS Grind-by-Weight Grinder

The Mahlkönig E65W GbS is an electric espresso grinder with a built-in scale, designed for cafés making a larger number of doses with several barista shifts. It controls the dose to within 0.1 g, and electric burr adjustment lets the Sync system correct grind size automatically. It is the current successor to the discontinued Mahlkönig E65S GbW, not another name for it.

How does the Mahlkönig E65W GbS work?

A built-in load cell weighs the ground coffee in real time. It takes 6,000 measurements per second and stops grinding once the saved dose is reached. Accuracy of 0.1 g reduces differences caused by grinder run time, changing ambient conditions and the way individual baristas work.

Grind by Sync adds automatic grind size adjustment to weight-based dosing. A compatible espresso machine or Sync device sends the extraction time, and the grinder compares it with the value saved in the recipe. If the espresso runs too fast, the system closes the gap between the burrs. If it runs too slow, it grinds coarser.

Adjustment is carried out by a stepper motor working with the AGSA system. Positioning accuracy is 0.001 mm (1 micron), so corrections can be much smaller than when turning a dial by hand.

Does the grinder work without the app? Yes. Without an app connection it still grinds, weighs every dose and can be controlled from the display. A connection to the Mahlkönig Sync ecosystem is needed for automatic data exchange with a compatible espresso machine or Sync device, remote recipe management, reports and software updates.

GbS, GbW and E65S: what exactly do they mean?

Grind by Weight doses coffee based on its weight. Grind by Sync uses the same weighing principle but adds electric burr adjustment and the ability to correct grind automatically based on extraction time. So GbS does not replace the scale. It combines weight-based dosing with communication between the grinder and the espresso machine or another Sync device.

The Mahlkönig E65S GbW belongs to the previous generation and has been discontinued. Its successor is the E65W GbS. In the current naming, the letter S means a time-based model and W a weight-based one. The older name E65S GbW kept the S from the base E65S, and the GbW suffix indicated the added scale.

The standard E65S is 9,349 zł gross, has no built-in scale and uses manual grind adjustment. The E65W GbS is 13,339 zł gross, a difference of 3,990 zł. Anyone looking for the E65S GbW should now choose the E65W GbS if they want weight-based dosing and the option to expand the station within the Sync system.

When is the built-in scale worth paying for?

It pays off above all where coffee is ground in large quantities and several people work behind the bar. A built-in scale removes one of the common causes of variation between espressos: differences in dose weight between baristas, shifts and hours of the day. There is no need to weigh every dose separately or correct grinding time when the grinder’s output changes.

In a small, low-volume venue with one experienced barista, the E65S without a scale may be the more economical choice. With a high number of espressos, savings on coffee, faster recipe set-up and fewer wrong doses start to matter. Sync further reduces manual grind corrections, but full automation only comes once the grinder is connected to a compatible espresso machine or Mahlkönig Sync device.

Build and output of the Mahlkönig E65W GbS

The grinder uses 65 mm flat burrs made of special steel with an expected life of around 800 kg of coffee. On a 50 Hz supply they turn at 1,400 rpm, delivering 4-5 g/s at a 250 micron setting. The hopper holds around 1.2 kg of beans.
