Looking for a home espresso machine with real café pedigree? Three single-group machines come up again and again: the La Marzocco Linea Micra, the La Marzocco Linea Mini R and the Victoria Arduino Eagle One Prima. All three come from manufacturers whose machines work in cafés around the world, yet they differ in size, workflow and who they are built for. Here is how they compare on the numbers, without the marketing.

The three machines at a glance

Linea Micra is the smallest La Marzocco for the home. Dual boilers and PID in a body just 29 cm wide. A good fit for a small kitchen and a few drinks a day.

Linea Mini R is the home version of the café Linea. Bigger and heavier than the Micra, with a 3 l steam boiler and more room to adjust. Choose it if you make a lot of milk drinks every day.

Eagle One Prima is a professional single-group machine from Victoria Arduino, with NEO technology and volumetric dosing. Victoria Arduino designed it for homes as well as small coffee bars, so it brings commercial features into a compact format.

La Marzocco Linea Micra: the smallest La Marzocco for your kitchen

The Linea Micra is a scaled-down version of the café Linea Classic S. It has two independent boilers, 0.25 l for brewing and 1.6 l for steam, plus an integrated group and PID control. With separate boilers you can pull a shot and steam milk at the same time, with no waiting and no switching modes.

Day to day you get a 3-in-1 portafilter (single spout, double spout and bottomless), an insulated steam wand that stays cooler on the outside and a magnetic drip tray. The La Marzocco Home app lets you set the temperature, schedule the machine to switch on and run an automatic backflush cycle.

The Micra comes in seven colours, and we list each one as a separate product, for example the Linea Micra in black.

La Marzocco Linea Mini R: a café Linea on your countertop

The Linea Mini R brings the key parts of La Marzocco’s commercial machines into a single-group home machine: an integrated group, dual boilers, PID and a standard 58 mm portafilter. That means you can use the wide range of baskets, tampers and other accessories made for café machines.

The biggest practical difference from the Micra is the 3 l steam boiler. You get more steam in reserve, which shows when you make several cappuccinos in a row. The Mini R also lets you adjust pump pressure mechanically, and with a compatible scale it supports Brew by Weight, which stops the shot automatically at your target beverage weight. In the app you can set the temperature, pre-infusion and the on/off schedule. How much you can adjust pre-infusion depends on whether the machine runs from the reservoir or is plumbed in.

We stock the current Linea Mini R in several colours.

Victoria Arduino Eagle One Prima: NEO technology and volumetric dosing

The Eagle One Prima heats water differently from both La Marzocco machines. Its NEO (New Engine Optimization) technology combines rapid water heating with smaller, insulated boilers, so less water has to be kept hot for each extraction. According to Victoria Arduino, this improves energy efficiency.

Dosing is volumetric: you program the volume of water that flows through the coffee, not the weight of the finished espresso, and start the shot with one button. The standard steam wand has Cool Touch insulation. As an option you can choose the EasyCream wand, which froths milk automatically and stops at the temperature you set. The machine connects over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and can run from its 1.5 l reservoir or be plumbed in, depending on configuration.

The Prima is the widest and heaviest machine here. Victoria Arduino built it for homes and small coffee bars alike, so it can also work in an office or at a small bar, as long as its output matches the number of drinks you make. In our shop you will find, among others, the Eagle One Prima in matt black.

Linea Micra vs Linea Mini: size matters more than photos suggest

In product photos the Micra and the Mini R look almost the same. On a kitchen counter the difference is obvious. The Micra is 29 cm wide and weighs 19 kg. The Mini R is 36 cm wide and weighs 30 kg. According to current manufacturer spec sheets, the Mini R is also 6.8 cm deeper and 4.2 cm taller.

Before you buy, measure your counter and the clearance under any wall cabinets. Leave space for a grinder too, as it usually sits right next to the machine. In a small kitchen the Micra is often the more practical choice. If you have the room and make plenty of milk drinks, the Mini R with its larger steam boiler is worth a look.

Which home espresso machine should you choose?

  • Linea Micra: space is tight, you make a few espressos or cappuccinos a day and you want a La Marzocco in the smallest possible footprint.
  • Linea Mini R: you make lots of milk drinks, often have guests, and want a standard 58 mm portafilter, adjustable pump pressure and Brew by Weight with a compatible scale.
  • Eagle One Prima: you value repeatable volumetric doses and optional automatic milk frothing with EasyCream, or you need a machine that will also cope in an office or a small café.

Still not sure? Give us a call. We will help you match the machine and grinder to your kitchen, the number of drinks you make and how you like to brew.

Grinder and coffee for a home espresso machine

Each of these machines needs a proper espresso grinder with fine grind adjustment. For home use, a good example is the Mahlkönig E64 WS with 64 mm flat burrs and grind-by-weight. We explain how burr types differ in Burr grinders: flat or conical burrs?

Fresh coffee matters just as much. We roast coffee for espresso with a range of flavour profiles. If your shots taste sour, read our guide to sour espresso.
