There are evenings when you fancy a coffee, the clock says 21:13, and your heart is still doing a salsa routine after the last espresso. That is usually the moment the thought arrives: what about decaf?
And right behind it, the usual objections:
“It cannot taste like real coffee.”
“That is for people who are afraid of living.”
“Come on, decaf is not proper coffee.”
So we put it to the test: can you drink decaf for the pleasure of it, rather than out of necessity?
What decaf actually is
To be clear, decaf is coffee like any other. Most of the caffeine has been taken out of the beans, around 97-99% of it, and the flavour and aroma stay behind. As long as nobody botched the job along the way.
The best results come from the Swiss Water method, which uses no chemical solvents at all, only water, temperature and filtration. Less snake oil, more process control, no strange aftertaste.

The evening test: how whole bean decaf really performs
We took our whole bean decaf, the one you keep coming back to, with the light body and the chocolate and plum profile, and brewed it at 20:47. A straight espresso first. Then a flat white. Then nothing happened. As in: no buzz, no restless legs, no lying awake.
The important part is that the flavour was there. Full, clean, no odd bitterness, no cardboard finish. If we had not known it was decaf, we would not have guessed.
Why keep decaf at home
Because sometimes you want coffee for the taste, not for the “get up, there is a day to rescue” effect. Decaf is:
-
an evening coffee in front of a box set, with no risk that you are still scrolling at 2 am reading about the life of the armadillo,
-
an option for guests who have had enough after their second cappuccino,
-
a way out for people who are sensitive to caffeine and would rather not drink water all evening.

But honestly, is it not the sad version of real coffee?
No. If the decaf is roasted properly, and ours is, you do not owe anyone an explanation for drinking it. It is not a compromise. It is a choice.
Much like cocoa in the evening, or jazz on a Sunday afternoon.
In short: whole bean decaf is not pretending to be coffee. It is coffee.
Good decaf does not shout, it does not shove, it does not push you into doing something.
It hands you a warm mug instead of driving caffeine into your bloodstream.
If you are still hesitating, just try it. This might be the coffee that was missing from your evenings.
