Colberg, a name that points back to the town’s history
The name of the roastery is two words pushed together: Colberg, the historical name of Kołobrzeg, and coffee. That is how Colbergcoffee came about.
It is more than a coffee brand, though. Our roastery sits on the edge of Kołobrzeg, a town on the Polish Baltic coast, and takes its cue from the place’s long history, from the centuries when it was known as Kolberg. We try to catch something of that in every bean we roast.
Kołobrzeg, once Colberg
Kołobrzeg is one of the oldest towns in Poland, with a history reaching back to the early Middle Ages. The first settlements appeared here in the 6th and 7th centuries, and the town grew into an important trading and fishing centre thanks to its position on the river Parsęta and the Baltic Sea (Wikipedia). In the Middle Ages, under the name Kolberg, it joined the Hanseatic League, and that membership brought it economic and cultural prosperity (Wikipedia).
How Colbergcoffee started
Our story begins in January 2018, when the Pilichowski family decided to open their own coffee roastery. Samuel, Zuzanna and Estera have been in it from the first day, choosing the coffees, roasting them and getting them out into the world. Our first blend, the Kołobrzeg Blend, caught on quickly, which is why we soon had to move up to bigger equipment.
How we roast
Quality is where we put our effort. We use the Slow Roasted method, which draws the full flavour and aroma out of each bean. Our traditional drum roaster lets us work in small batches, and that is what keeps the coffee fresh and gives every roast its own character. We make both blends and single origin coffees, matched to different brew methods, from espresso to filter.
What the name Colberg means to us
Colberg is a nod to the historical name of the town. We wanted the brand to stand for good coffee and to carry a piece of local history along with it. Colbergcoffee is where the past and the present of this place meet, and where tradition and modern roasting meet too.
What we make
Colbergcoffee has a broad range: classic blends such as the Captain’s Blend, single origin coffees of specialty quality, and light roasts for pour-over. Our coffee goes to households and to the hospitality trade alike. We are also a distributor of Italian espresso machines: Victoria Arduino, Nuova Simonelli and La Marzocco.
Part of the town
Colbergcoffee is a roastery, but it is also an active part of what goes on locally. We run workshops and tastings and we support events in the town. Our cafe in Kołobrzeg is the place to taste what we do and get a feel for the town itself.
